About the Exhibition

Revisiting Japanese feminist expression from the perspective of its intersection with media culture
Enlisting the cooperation of photographer NAGASHIMA Yurie in its planning, this overview of the brand of feminism that started in Japan with what became known as the “Girly Movement” simultaneously focuses on the interplay of Japanese media culture and feminism since 1990. The world that shaped sensibilities via magazines, comics, TV anime, music videos and games now occupies a central place in contemporary art expression. Through the internet, personal feelings of unease and incongruity are shared and expressed across past, present and future, and nationality, swelling into “social unease.” In a social structure where the unease of those who do not share that unease in turn becomes organized, artists endeavor to produce expression while moving between media and the individual. While accepting for the moment the inclusion of ideas such as “kawaii” and “rashisa” (“being like”) in the diversity of gender, this exhibition adopts a feminist viewpoint to consider how we should confront unease.
