21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa

A special performance will be held at the museum featuring street performer Gilyak Amagasaki, who is also one of the exhibiting artists. Now 95 years old and still actively performing, he is widely regarded as one of Japan’s most iconic street performers. Living solely on audience donations, he has continued to stand on rojō, earning deep respect from fellow performers across the country.
Even after developing Parkinson’s disease, he has continued to perform regularly in cities such as Shinjuku, Kyoto, Hakodate, and Sapporo. His guerrilla-style appearances around Shibuya Station and other urban spaces—performing with nothing but his body—remind us that rojō can function as kugai, an open civic realm accessible to all. Last year, he also presented a dance of prayer in Wajima.
Reflecting on this long journey, the performance in Kanazawa will take the recovery of Noto as one of its themes, presenting a choreography that symbolically connects Noto and
Kanazawa. We invite you to experience a form of street performance shaped by a body thathas lived for decades on rojō—a performance that can exist only here and now.
