About the Exhibition

“Philosophical Fashion”—a series inquiring into the meaning of clothing today, when trends change with dizzying speed, driven by the phenomenal rise of “fast fashion.” Featured in this series are creators who consistently propose new fashions on the basis of an enduring concept. The first exhibition in the series will examine the project “FINAL HOME” of fashion designer TSUMURA Kosuke.
“When people lose their home, their final protection is their clothing.”
The nylon coats born from this concept have received the name FINAL HOME. When their many pockets are stuffed with newsprint, the coats provide strong protection against the cold. When filled with emergency goods, they become evacuation jackets.
Tsumura first created FINAL HOME in 1994. Since then, Japan has suffered two disasters of unprecedented scale, the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and Great Eastern Japan Earthquake. Compelled by his mission as a fashion designer, Tsumura has continually pondered the relationships between fashion, society, and the natural environment. Through the activities of FINAL HOME, this exhibition will examine the roles played by clothing and fashion.

Message from the Designer

An art museum is an element of a city’s composition, a public institution that acts on our aesthetic sensibilities through art and provides opportunities to think about people and society.
Art museums today must maintain and preserve artworks of wide-ranging variety, and hence, they also require wide-ranging equipment. This means air conditioners, display stands, protective cases, lighting devices, projectors, and monitors. On top of this, there is the clothing, magazines, mobile phones, and other things that people typically bring inside the museum. As a result, an art museum is filled to overflowing with objects of all kinds.
Still, most visitors are conscious only of the artworks displayed, and do not notice the display stands and protective cases or the clothing and other items brought in by people. Naturally, the museum gives thought to preventing such things from interfering with art appreciation, and visitors, too, view the artworks with the unspoken understanding that they should disregard these things.
If we can escape our fixed perceptions and view a situation with objectivity, we can discover beauty in a space. If our attention can be enhanced, we may even be able to foresee danger.
Therefore, by placing the spotlight on the equipment used in the display of art and on the everyday items of our lives, I have contrived an installation that looks freshly at objects around us whose existence we overlook.
At the core of the installation is FINE HOME: nylon wear with pockets created by partitioning the space between the outer material and the lining. The pockets are easily opened and closed, using zippers that work both ways. When the pockets are not in use, it simply becomes a coat with a liner again, and can be worn as minimal fashion wear, whose pockets are unnoticeable.
Urban survival wear—FINAL HOME. It is first wear and it is final wear, put to practical use as a “final home.” It is also a symbol of the thinking behind my design activities. I hope my installation will move viewers to think about people and clothing, and about cities and nature.
