We are surrounded by an immense flood of information. As the internet, social media,e-books, and digital video continue to advance, we have come to own only those printed books and magazines we truly need. NEUTRAL COLORS is an independent publisher founded in 2019 with the goal of printing, in only the quantities needed, not the “information” that circulates online but the “emotions” that demand to be retained in physical form. NEUTRAL COLORS is simultaneously the name of the publisher, of the magazine it publishes, and of its printing and binding workshop. At a time when instant sharing of digital information has become the norm, NEUTRAL COLORS remains steadfast in its approach to production: meeting the people it wishes to meet, listening to them at length, and devoting the necessary time to producing publications that deserve to endure.
This exhibition presents the very essence of its approach, tracing how reporting, editing, design, layout, printing, binding, and distribution organically intertwine. Through this process, NEUTRAL COLORS continues to share unique experiences, creative work, and memories through one-of-a-kind pages incorporating risography and other hands-on printing techniques.
Collaboration with outside partners is indispensable to the work of NEUTRAL COLORS. With the cooperation of independent bookstores, printers, designers, and others active in Kanazawa, this exhibition explores a new paradigm for the publishing cycle. Visitors can also follow the one-year cycle of NEUTRAL COLORS as a “circuit,” watching the gallery change according to the work underway as it functions in turn as a publishing house, office, and printing and binding workshop.
NEUTRAL COLORS is an independent publisher. It is also the title of the magazine it publishes, as well as the name of its printing and binding workshop, and the three are organically connected. Handling everything from printing and binding to distribution, NEUTRAL COLORS aims to create an economically sustainable mid-scale publishing model that is somewhere between mass commercial printing and small-volume independent publishing (approximately 5,000 copies for magazines, 300–1,000 copies for books and art books). In 2025 it launched NEW COVER, a bookstore within the NEUTRAL COLORS office, which sells art books gathered from around the world.
Editor
Kato has devoted his career to magazine editing, taking part in the founding of NEUTRAL, TRANSIT, and ATLANTIS. After working at a publisher, an editorial production company, and a design studio, he launched the one-person publishing house NEUTRAL COLORS in 2019. There he produces art books that build manual processes into the printing itself, among them risography and silkscreen. In 2020 he launched the magazine NEUTRAL COLORS, published once a year, and participates in art book fairs around the world.
Graphic designer
Born in Aichi, Japan in 1992. Based in Kanagawa. He focuses primarily on cultural and artistic projects, including book design and printed promotional materials for exhibitions. In 2025 he launched the publishing project Meian. Major project include the magazine NEUTRAL COLORS (published by NEUTRAL COLORS, 2020–present), the design journal Ilmm (FLOOAT, 2024–present), and the Japanese edition of Nicolas Bourriaud’s book The Radicant (Film Art, Inc., 2022).
