Kanazawa Fringe 2017

2017.11.2 (Thu.) - 2017.11.5 (Sun.)

“Kanazawa Fringe” is a plurality of in-residence art projects by artists and creators from Japan and abroad who are creating new artworks in the context of their discoveries in Kanazawa. Spilling from the museum out into the city, they develop their projects in a circulatory spiral—first, “meeting” Kanazawa’s districts, people and issues from an art perspective, then making “proposal” of new approaches, initiating creative “action,” and inducing gentle “change.” The goal of all this, over the long term, will be to make Kanazawa a hub of creative activity. Projects are implemented in two-year cycles. On the basis of research conducted last year by project directors, in-residence production of new works will be publically shown in November 2017.

AIR21 : Kanazawa Fringe 2016

2016.6.11 (Sat.) - 2016.9.11 (Sun.)

"AIR21: Kanazawa Fringe" is an artist-in-residence program that ventures outside of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa to examine the challenges, people, and locations of Kanazawa from an artistic perspective. Launched in 2015 under the title of Museum x KNZ Fringe - Meeting with the City, the program was renamed in 2016 to "AIR21: Kanazawa Fringe". Five directors invite artists and creators from around Japan and overseas to collaborate on seven research projects from June to September. The results attained from these projects are to be utilized in a new artist-in-residence program planned for 2017.

AIR21 : Kanazawa Fringe 2016 official website

* The word "fringe" refers to something regarded as peripheral or marginal. In this program, artists invited from around Japan and overseas interact with various fringe elements of Kanazawa, namely the city and its people, to create new works together during their stay. The program's long-term goal is to transform Kanazawa into a hub for creative activities by implementing a creative cyclical spiral of (1) interacting with the city and its people, (2) proposing new perspectives and values, (3) undertaking creative activities, and (4) bringing about change in the participating artists, the city, and its people.

Japan-Korea-UK Co-production

ONE DAY, MAYBE

2013.11.28 (Thu.) - 2013.12.8 (Sun.)

A Japan-Korea-UK co-production presented by 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, The Museum of Art, Kochi, and Asian Arts Theater of Asian Cultute Complex (Gwangju, Korea).
Interweaving live performance with film and new technologies, the production will orchestrate the entire space of the building or site. It is being created by British theater company, dreamthinkspeak artistic director Tristan SHARPS, who is known for walk-through performances that immerse audiences in the world of the artwork, as a collaborative project with artists from all regions of Japan and Korea. Inspired by the May 1980 democratization movement that arose in Gwangju, Korea, the production is a universal story influenced by themes of freedom and liberation. It will open in Gwangju in September before traveling to Kochi and Kanazawa in November and December.
A production that will transcend the theatre framework and uncover new performing arts potential―in the context of regional cities.
