About the Exhibition

NISHIMURA Yu (1982- ) complexly overlays commonplace scenes and actions, and fragments of “fulfillment” in everyday life to construct a single unified scene in a painting. His approach resembles that of a novelist assembling words and forming paragraphs to weave a narrative. While personal and small in scale, Nishimura says, the momentary scenes and pleasant spaces of our days lend us psychological support. While always concrete in nature, the phenomena Nishimura depicts appear as if occurring in a place remote from reality, owing to his characteristic blurred brushstrokes and coloring. This exhibition’s title, “paragraph,” implies one complete unit. When we see each painting as a paragraph and move through the exhibition, reading and absorbing the pictures dispersed throughout the venue, the rich everyday moments and scenes they portray will congeal in a narrative and speak to us. Viewers will likely want to remain endlessly in the venue’s spaces, looking at Nishimura’s paintings and imagining, not one, but multiple narratives. Featured will be 13 new works of varying sizes, displayed so as to draw viewers deeply into the narrative.

Artist Statement

《scenery passing(out of town)》2018

The image I want to depict and the image that newly appears during production. My artworks manifest in the interval and depths of time between them. Always, the artwork takes form and actualizes in an unexpected direction, irrespective of my thinking. As the partially completed canvases collect, their plural images commingle, as if falling into correlation, and hang suspended in the interim—like a shape I am ordinarily unaware of, at the edge of my vision. If I can grasp the image, then I can resume developing the uncompleted canvas. This time, working within the sequential structure of an exhibition, I hope to weave an array of scenes dispersed throughout the venue.

Aperto

The exhibition series “Aperto” introduces up-and-coming young artists in a solo exhibition format. As an art museum actively engaged with the contemporary world, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa looks closely at new trends now in the process of forming. Artists and curators collaborate in creating occasions for exhibiting works and act as an intermediary between today’s creation and that of the future. This exhibition series looks at individual artists who, although having little experience with solo or important group exhibitions at art museums, possess sufficient creative motivation to command a solo exhibition and who are expected to make a significant impact in the future. Artists are selected without regard for their nationality or expressive media by the curator at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. Note: “Aperto” is Italian for “open.”
