As a special exhibition marking its 10th anniversary, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa will hold an exhibition, “Architecture since 3.11,” exploring new architectural trends in Japan since the 3.11 disaster. The 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami forced architects to fundamentally rethink their understanding of architecture and society’s systems. What role will be demanded of architects hereafter, and what kind of future should they envision? Including such perspectives as energy and environment within its scope, the exhibition will look at architecture since 2011 through the endeavors of 25 architectural offices and ponder the architect’s role.

Projects

Three new projects have been launched in Kanazawa in conjunction with this exhibition. Their results are presented in the “Architecture since 3.11” exhibition.
1. “Nigechizu(evacuation map)” Project: Nikken Sekkei Volunteer Group

On July 21 and August 10, citizens of the Oono district of coastal Kanazawa created an “Nigechizu(evacuation map)” under the guidance of Nikken Sekkei Volunteer Group. The map, which shows routes and required times for escaping a tsunami, is aimed at enabling citizens to take the lead in creating safe communities.

2. Experiments in the People's Gallery: dot architects, 403architecture [dajiba], KAKIUCHI Koji

The design of an exhibit space will be undertaken by architects in collaboration with user groups of the People’ s Gallery at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. The event is aimed at discovering new methods of interaction between artists and architects.

3. Kanazawa Town Building Survey: BMC (bldg mania cafe)

In July and August, publically recruited “survey team members” conducted research into buildings constructed during Japan’ s 1950s~ ‘70s high-level economic growth era, led by BMC (bldg mania cafe), an Osaka citizen group. Kanazawa is distinguished by its layered history and buildings from many periods going back to the Edo Period. The beauty and appeal of the buildings of this era, which tend to be overlooked, will be presented in the exhibition.
