About the Artist

Federico HERRERO
Born in 1978 in San José, Costa Rica. Lives and works in San José.
An artist in the Collection of 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa

Federico Herrero won the Golden Lion for the best artist under 35 at the 49th Venice Biennale in 2001. As a painter, Herrero does not confine his relationship with his medium to the traditional painting framework. Whether confronting a canvas, a building wall or floor, or the exterior of a bus, he rolls out a world of “fantasy” that is uniquely his own, taking a light, freely imaginative approach and point of view. His work is characterized by compositions with little sense of pictorial depth or center point, like graffiti, in which masses of color receive play side by side with figurative and abstract motifs. Herrero also undertakes many wall paintings and other works of public art in which the city itself literally becomes his canvas. While mixing in elements of subculture, he gives unique, richly varied expression to personal memories and the myriad events occurring everyday in the world around him. He created a wall painting for Expo 2005 Aichi Japan.
